Quercus palustris 'Early defoliating form'

Pin Oak

Technical information

Height: 10-12m

Habit & Growth rate: Moderate, ovate growing tree, with a strong central leader. With drooping lower branches, with the upper crown having ascending branches.

Foliage: Lustrous, dark green leaves with five to seven deep fine lobes. Leaf colour in autumn is deep red to bronze. The “early defoliant form” completely defoliates each winter.

Comments:

The “early defoliant form” of Quercus palustris has the advantage of completely defoliating in the winter, excellent structure and less likely to develop co-dominant leaders. Very adaptable to a wide range of site conditions including both wet or dry, clay or sandy soils. Will handle drought conditions, air pollution and good tolerance to winds. May suffer iron related chlorosis in soils with a high pH.

All plant dimensions are estimates only and ultimate size and growth rates will depend on growing conditions, particularly when used in some urban environments. All estimates are based around a 20-year time frame. With maturity most species will grow larger.
