acacia-melanoxylon-300-1

Acacia melanoxylon

Blackwood

Height: 6-20m

Comments: Considered small to large tree. Very common on a variety sites including basalt plains of Melbourne, where it may grow to 6-12m compared to 20m in ideal sites.

A. melanoxylon is very long  lived 15 years plus with some living over a 100 years. Blackwoods flower during winter with some fragrance and have dense dark grey-green foliage.

Blackwoods have a spreading root system, which makes them excellent for erosion control. In the urban environment they will not do well in dry compacted sites ,to reach their potential they need free draining soil and plenty of room to spread.

All plant dimensions are estimates only and ultimate size and growth rates will depend on growing conditions, particularly when used in some urban environments.
